The Village Co-Op
The Village is the best place for a grad student to live in Ann Arbor. If you are attending the law school or the med school, or if you are doing a residency at St. Joe's in Ypsilanti or the University of Michigan Hospital, take a closer look.
The Village is a co-op -- roughly 200 units are spread out over more than 400 acres less than a ten-minute drive from the law school. The units were built in the 1940s to house families working at factories in Ypsilanti (Ann Arbor's neighboring town to the east); they were refurbished in the mid-80s and now they're occupied mostly by couples, retired folks, some students, and a few families. In addition to being a lovely place for a grad student to live, it's an active community of residents: here's the most recent Village newsletter.
Our house (here's a Google map) has 810 square feet; it has a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen, and a basement. It also has a fantastic backyard, and a deck:
The Village has a common-use pool and tennis courts.

The pool is a five-minute walk from our place. The tennis court is just across the street, behind my neighbors' units -- close enough to play tennis whenever it's nice!
I loved living here. We installed a new stove, dishwasher, sink and refrigerator in 2004. We had the entire electrical system rewired. We put in a new furnace.
We have a washer and a dryer in the basement. Doing your laundry in your own home -- whoo ha!
The basement walls and floor have been epoxied to prevent water from entering into the basement. It's a great place to study.
In the spring, the trees outside the house bloom. They're beautiful:
Nearby Stuff
You need to eat when you're in school. There are four grocery stores within driving distance: two Kroeger's, a Whole Foods, and Hiller's (a great Ann Arbor grocery store). The locations of Whole Foods and Hiller's are below:
(A) is Whole Foods, and (G) is Hiller's. The small red dot just north of Packard Rd. is the house. (When the weather's nice, you can easily walk to Hiller's.)
Transportation
Ann Arbor has a great bus transportation system for being such a little town. The #5 bus picks up about two blocks from the house and drops off about a block from the law school at the university. (Here are inbound and outbound schedules.)
If you want to drive to school each day (here's a map of directions between the house and the law school), you can buy a parking pass at one of the the student lots; you can also park for free on a number of streets. When I was in law school, I parked on White St. just south of the law school.
The red square is the law school. I could always find an open parking spot on White St. in the blue-shaded areas. From there, it's a short walk to the law school.
For Sale / Rent
We're renting the unit for $810/month. We may be willing to sell the unit, if you're interested.
